TONY A. GIBBENS
Mr. Gibbens is more than just a patent attorney. Before becoming a patent attorney, Mr. Gibbens worked in the field of DAI (Distributed Artificial Intelligence), helped to found a whole new field of technology, worked on numerous U.S. Government research and defense-related projects, and even has some hardware in space. Not satisfied, Mr. Gibbens then went on to have a 20-year career, where he worked with numerous start-ups, both in development of technology and in management, helping the start-ups succeed, have successful IPO’s, and manage their technological property for continued success. It was at this time that Mr. Gibbens came to understand Intellectual Property, not in the theoretical sense of law, but in the real-world sense of business and competition.
Mr. Gibbens wanted to do more. He recognized that his real-world business understanding of what Intellectual Property is, and how it helps companies succeed, could be leveraged to help others succeed. Mr. Gibbens obtained his law degree from Indiana University, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude, achieved four A-stars (top score in class), and had an internship with the Office of the Indiana Attorney General within their Advisory group, the group that provides opinions to Indiana’s elected officials and provides the official positions of the Office of the Indiana Attorney General.
Since then, Mr. Gibbens has performed patent work for some of the world’s most prestigious technology companies, including, Google, Apple, and MacAfee. He has co-managed the entire IP portfolio, including the international IP, of a giant software company, has helped to maximize the IP portfolio of several companies, assisting in their successful IPO, and has devised numerous strategies, enabling smaller companies to safeguard their IP and ensure their continued success in an intensely competitive environment.
Mr. Gibbens’ experience spans a wide range of industries including software, online services, banking and financial systems, life sciences, medical devices, food, and healthcare, while working for various consulting firms, Universities, and Research and Development Institutions and centers. Mr. Gibbens has assisted in the valuing of IP, the sale and acquisition of IP, as well as the sale of business assets. Technologies that Mr. Gibbens has worked on include, quantum-based technologies, Medical technologies including dietary supplements, Polymer-based chemical technologies, various nanotechnologies, anti-microbial technologies, surface conditioning and coating technologies, electrical technologies, and surveillance and security technologies.
In addition to serving as a patent attorney and trusted business advisor, Mr. Gibbens is currently a Director at a well-known, Indianapolis biotech rising star and is on the Board of Directors of DVN (Domestic Violence Network). His work as the Director at the Indianapolis biotech firm includes, building and maximizing the firm’s IP portfolio, crafting business strategy, negotiating and forming strategic alliances, and shaping business relationships. His work on the Board of Directors at DVN includes crafting strategy, evaluating legal liability, and review of all other legal matters.
Mr. Gibbens understands that law enables Intellectual Property, but business savvy and understanding creates value.
